although/though/even though và despite/in spite of; however, whereas, while — đi với mệnh đề hay với danh từ.

Muốn nói "mặc dù… nhưng…" hay so sánh hai điều trái ngược, tiếng Anh có ba nhóm từ, và mỗi nhóm đứng ở một vị trí khác nhau.

+ mệnh đề (S + V)+ danh từ / V-ingnối hai câu

although, though, even though + mệnh đề

Although the hotel was expensive, we enjoyed our stay.
Mặc dù khách sạn đắt, chúng tôi vẫn rất thích kỳ nghỉ.
Even though they worked very hard, they missed the deadline.
Dù đã cố hết sức, họ vẫn không kịp hạn chót.

even though nhấn mạnh hơn although. though có thể đứng cuối câu trong văn nói: It was expensive. We enjoyed it, though.

despite, in spite of + danh từ / V-ing

Despite the high price, we enjoyed our stay.
Mặc dù giá cao, chúng tôi vẫn rất thích kỳ nghỉ.
In spite of being tired, she finished the report.
Dù mệt, cô ấy vẫn làm xong báo cáo.

Muốn dùng despite với một mệnh đề thì thêm the fact that: Despite the fact that it was raining, the event went ahead.

while, whereas: so sánh hai điều trái ngược

Sales increased in Asia, whereas they fell in Europe.
Doanh số tăng ở châu Á, trong khi lại giảm ở châu Âu.
While some people prefer working from home, others like the office.
Có người thích làm ở nhà, trong khi người khác thích lên văn phòng.

even if: cho dù (giả định)

Even if it rains, the event will go ahead.
Cho dù trời mưa, sự kiện vẫn diễn ra.

even though nói về điều có thật (thực tế trời đã mưa); even if nói về điều có thể xảy ra (chưa biết có mưa không).

however, nevertheless: nối hai câu

Từ nối đứng đầu câu thứ hai, sau dấu chấm hoặc dấu chấm phẩy, và có dấu phẩy theo sau. Xem thêm Từ nối (trạng từ liên kết).

The hotel was expensive. However, we enjoyed our stay.
Khách sạn khá đắt. Tuy nhiên chúng tôi vẫn rất thích kỳ nghỉ.
The project faced many problems; nevertheless, it was completed on time.
Dự án gặp nhiều khó khăn; dù vậy, nó vẫn hoàn thành đúng hạn.

Lỗi hay gặp

✗ Although the price was high, but we bought it.

✓ Although the price was high, we bought it.

Không dùng although và but trong cùng một câu.

✗ Despite it was raining, we went out.

✓ Despite the rain, we went out.

despite + danh từ. Có mệnh đề thì dùng although: Although it was raining, …

✗ Despite of the rain, the match continued.

✓ Despite the rain, the match continued.

despite không đi với of; in spite thì luôn có of (in spite of).

✗ The project was difficult, however we finished it on time.

✓ The project was difficult; however, we finished it on time.

however không nối hai mệnh đề bằng dấu phẩy. Dùng dấu chấm phẩy (hoặc dấu chấm), hoặc dùng but.
