Cấu tạo từ: tiền tố và hậu tố
Word formation: prefixes & suffixes
Nhận ra từ loại qua đuôi từ (-tion, -ment, -ful, -ive, -ly…) và đổi nghĩa bằng tiền tố (un-, dis-, re-…).
Hậu tố (đuôi từ) thường cho biết từ loại: -tion là danh từ, -ive là tính từ, -ly thường là trạng từ. Tiền tố (phần đầu từ) thường đổi nghĩa, ví dụ thêm nghĩa phủ định hay "làm lại", mà không đổi từ loại. Nắm được các đuôi này là làm được phần lớn câu chọn dạng từ trong TOEIC (xem Từ loại và vị trí trong câu).

Đuôi của trạng từ
Phần lớn là tính từ + -ly: quick → quickly, efficient → efficiently.
- -y → -ily: easy → easily
- -le → -ly: possible → possibly
- -ic → -ically: specific → specifically (riêng public → publicly)
- Không có đuôi -ly: fast, hard, late, early; good → well
Chú ý hard (chăm chỉ) khác hardly (hầu như không), late (muộn) khác lately (gần đây). Xem thêm Trạng từ.
